Updating your bathroom can be really exciting but the project is a big one that requires a lot of work. Before you remodel the bathroom there are a couple of things you’re going to need to do first. Here are some of the critical steps you need to complete before you start gutting your bathroom.
Determine Your Budget
Unless you’re a billionaire then money is going to determine the project and how much you can do. Before you start picking out fixtures and fittings you need to know how much you can afford to spend. Are you going to be spending your savings to do the renovations or will you be looking at some type of home improvement loan to pay for everything. Either way you want to get the best bang for your buck. Determine how much you can afford to spend and then start planning what to do.
How Long is it Going to Take
This is a big issue especially if this is the only bathroom that you have in the house. Some renovations are fairly simple and can be done in a weekend, but if you want to gut your bathroom down to the studs then it could take weeks. You also want to make sure that you have all the permits, materials and tradespeople lined up for when they are needed to make sure nothing delays the project. Which brings us to the next point.
Plan Out Your Renovation
Renovations or construction is done in a very specific order. If you are working with a contractor they should be take care of that for you. Ideally you want the demolition done first, then plumbing and electrical, install the tub and toilet and finally installing the tile. You want to do things in the right order or you will have to damage new materials to get to the plumbing.
Let’s Talk Design
There are tons of design options for the bathroom, everything from the color of the tiles to type of sink you install. Take a trip into your local home improvement store and have a look at the materials available and what will work in your space. Take measurements of your space so you know what you have to work with and design your space.
You want to start with the bigger parts of your project first, so start with choosing your tub, toilet and sink. This will take a big part of your budget, you also want to talk with your contractor about this too, make sure that you have adequate plumbing and electricity. From there you will want to choose the materials for the walls, floors and lighting. Make sure you set aside enough money for this, not only is tile expensive but it also comes with an installation cost aside from material.
Find the Right Contractor
This is the most important part of having your renovation go smoothly and successfully. Take your time and speak to several different contractors, get pricing, written quotes and more importantly make sure you get solid references. A good contractor can mean the difference between having your renovation done on time and on budget or getting ripped off and your still stuck showering at the gym for six months. Always do your due diligence.
